The rule and its limits
The common rule is one-to-one: pitch in millimetres equals minimum viewing distance in metres. A P3 wall is acceptable from 3 m.
This marks the point where the image stops looking coarse. It does not mark the point where pixels become invisible.
Three distances worth knowing

The retina figure comes from the roughly one arc-minute resolving limit of human vision at 20/20.
Worked example
A 4 m wide wall in a corporate lobby. Closest viewer stands 2 m away while waiting for a lift.
- At P3, retina distance is 10.2 m — the grid will be visible to anyone waiting
- At P1.5, retina distance is 5.1 m — still visible up close, but not distracting
- At P0.9, retina distance is 3.1 m — clean at every realistic position
Specify from the closest viewer, not the average one. Lobby and reception walls are the most commonly under-specified installations for exactly this reason.
What else moves with pitch
Halving the pitch roughly quadruples the module count, and with it the price, the power draw, the data bandwidth and the number of failure points. Pitch is not a quality dial — it is a cost multiplier.
